In the water gun arms race, Super Soaker was always the high-tech bruiser with powerful air compression technology and a Raytheon-like reputation to match. Its guns are still fearsome–but today they face tough competition. We enlisted the shock troops of Shepaug Valley Middle School, in Washington, Conn., to screen new weapons in the lab and in impromptu (hey! don’t shoot the writer!) war games. These guns were the best. 1)Water Warriors Motorized TarantulaChris Eckert>Price $20Range 30 ft. 2 in.Tank 57 oz.Reload Time 23.6 sec. What it does The Tarantula uses a rechargeable 9.6-volt NiCd battery pack to operate a motor and maintain a continual stream of water–no pumping needed.Tester comments “Quick to shoot, awesome accuracy.“2)Super Soaker Bottle ShotChris Eckert>Price $8Range 29 ft. 10 in.*Tank 8 oz.*Reload Time 14.8 sec.*What it does What a smart idea: Build a gun to accept any standard water (or–yuck–soda) bottle. With a bandolier full of water bottles, a warrior could quickly reload all day.Tester comments “Small but powerful. I want this gun."*Stats as tested with supplied bottle.3)Water Sports Double Barrel Stream MachineChris Eckert>Price $20Range 32 ft. 4 in.Tank 50.7 oz.Reload Time 4 sec. What it does Guns don’t shoot people; water does. You load the two barrels by dunking the tips and pulling the plunger. The gun’s formidable, but it can’t be filled from a faucet.Tester comments “Shoots hard; must refill for each shot.“4)Super Soaker Sneak Attack 4-WayChris Eckert>Price $10Range 32 ft. 11 in.Tank 40.5 oz.Reload Time 21.5 sec. What it does Twist the nozzle and this pump-action weapon shoots right or left, in a focused stream or broad spray. Power and heft are impressive.Tester comments “Very useful–you can shoot around corners.“It’s all about your tactical needs. Some testers loved the Stream Machine–unbeatable in a pool-based fight, but useless in hose-only situations. The Bottle Shot was deemed the lightest, most foolproof weapon, while the feature-filled Tarantula and Sneak Attack were geek faves. PM’s pick: the Sneak Attack.
