Bahn-Burnin’ Hot Rods Mercedes-Benz introduces two new high-performance models at the Chicago Auto Show this week, the R63 AMG and ML63 AMG. Both vehicles, the SUV-type ML and the crossover-type R, offer a new engine developed independently by M-B’s in-house tuner shop, AMG. The horsepower rating is slightly over the top at 503 hp from a 6.3-liter V8. Torque is impressive, too, at 465 lb.-ft. Managing the performance is a seven-speed automatic transmission that offers three separate driving modes: Sport, Comfort and Manual. All-wheel drive is standard. Upgrades appear throughout the chassis and cabins, including 19-in. polished aluminum wheels and distinctive AMG seat designs.OnStar Upgrade In Chicago, General Motors announced that OnStar is offering an additional system that guides drivers to their destinations through voice directions. The GPS built into OnStar pinpoints the driver’s location and lays out a path to the chosen destination. The system is similar to that offered in typical navigation systems, and is supplemental to OnStar’s person-to-person contact with the driver. OnStar’s crash notification, door unlocking and e-mail services continue as part of the system’s basic package.–Jim DunneChicago Auto Show 8: Toyota Tundra, Honda Civic Si Sedan Concept Chicago Auto Show 7: Nissan Quest, Hyundai EntourageChicago Auto Show 6: Dodge Rampage ConceptChicago Auto Show 5: Lexus ES 350Chicago Auto Show 4: Dodge Caliber SRT4, Lincoln NavigatorMERCEDES-BENZ ML63 AMGMERCEDES-BENZ R63 AMGMercedes also North American-debuted its S600 flagship in Chicago.Nice and tidy, the S600’s 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 makes 517 hp and ungodly amounts of torque.
