Media Platforms Design TeamThe fastest motorcycle to make it to the top of this weekend’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb wasn’t gas powered and, in a pre-emptive strike against– uh, human strikes– emitted a “whoop whoop” siren sound warning of its approach.Beating internal combustion Ducatis, Kawasakis, Hondas and the likes was Carlin Dunne aboard his Lightning superbike, which clocked an offical time of 10:00.694. The next quickest motorcycle was a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S piloted by Bruno Langlois, which achieved a 10:21.323 overall time. EVs also made a strong showing in the four-wheeled realm, with Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima scoring fifth overall in his battery-driven Monster Sport E-Runner thanks to a 9:46.530 time. While legions of race fans are still having a tough time accepting the idea of electric vehicles on closed circuits, we’re guessing Dunne’s gas-beating win and Tajima’s impressive showing will go a long way wrapping enthusiast’s heads around the ideas that EVs can be fast enough to put fuel burning competitors on alert– and in some cases, behind them.
