Mazda will offer evolutionary styling changes in its Tribute SUV model for 2008. As seen from this photo of a new prototype, differences will affect just about all below-the-beltline sheet metal surfaces. Most remarkable are the changes in the front clip—the surfaces forward of the A post. The new grille opening is a variation of the 2006 model and retains the bright metal bar with a drop-down Mazda symbol. Below the grille, the fascia is entirely new, offering rectangular running lights and extending upward into the front fenders....

Proteins that are associated with cancer cells react with dyes on the sensor, emitting fluorescent light that can be detected with a microscope. The purchase of the high-performance brand expands Volkswagen’s current portfolio to eleven and puts Audi in even more direct competition with BMW. The two luxury carmakers have been battling on the automotive front in recent years, but now Audi will be able to chip away at BMW’s share of the bike market as well....

Mojave, Calif. — Virgin Galactic’s space plane, the Enterprise, will roll onto the runway early Sunday morning to begin its first solo test flight. Sources say that, after being lifted to an altitude of approximately 50,000 feet by its mothership, the craft will be released and glide to the runway in an unpowered descent that approximates the final phase of a space trip. Enterprise, designed to ferry six tourists into space, is the cornerstone of the best known attempt to start a space tourism industry....

NASA says the $1 billion it would cost to identify 90 percent of asteroids potentially bound for Earth is not in the agency’s budget. According to a report to be released this week, the agency could identify the estimated 20,000 space rocks, but the current lack of funding will prevent research from going forward. Space enthusiasts have already identified one potential killer asteroid, Apophis. Popular Mechanics investigated five possible plans to intercept Apophis before it becomes a (really, really big) problem....
